Introduction

Imagine a town where one could discover elements of Dante’s Inferno, Etruscan civilization etched on tufo rock and remnants of an important Jewish culture that gave Pitigliano the nickname of “Little Jerusalem.” This town exists: Pitigliano, at the southernmost point of Tuscany, and will charm and amaze visitors alike with its history, beauty, and mystery.

On a sunny winter day, I drove to Pitigliano, a town perched on a cliff of volcanic rock in Tuscany. I followed the Parking sign as soon as I arrived in Pitigliano and walked a narrow road toward the downtown. Was I going the right way? I wondered. Two men appeared, walking in the opposite direction. They looked like they knew the place well. They had friendly faces and warm smiles. I asked them for directions. “Come with us” they said. “We’ll take you there. And we’ll show you around.” They introduced themselves as Cesare and Giorgio, two lifelong friends and residents of Pitigliano. They offered to be my guides for the day, and I gladly accepted.

They gave me an amazing tour of Pitigliano’s history and culture from ancient to modern times, showing me wells carved into tufo rock where residents collected rainwater while hiding from invaders. I saw the stunning Medici aqueduct, the Orsini fortress, and the beautiful cathedral. Unfortunately, because it was a Saturday, the Synagogue was closed, and I missed it!

They invited me into their underground cantina, where for generations they had been making homemade wine and cheese stored in cool, dark tufo caves. Here I was welcomed with a refreshing glass of Bianco di Pitigliano white wine, one of the most renowned wines from the area.

My gracious hosts also offered me some sfratto, a uniquely shaped sweet pastry with its own history, which I’ll tell you about in a bit. And that is how I met Cesare and Giorgio, two of the kindest, friendliest people I’ve ever met.

Cesare and Giorgio showed me sides of Pitigliano I never would have found on my own and shared their stories and kindness. I now wish to pass those along to you, dear readers! Let’s explore Pitigliano together.

Where is Pitigliano?

Pitigliano is about 132 miles (212 km) west of Florence and can take around two hours and 36 minutes to travel depending on traffic and route conditions.

Pitigliano: The Matera of Tuscany

Pitigliano is perched on a cliff made of porous volcanic rock called “tufo.” Pitigliano is often compared to the city of Matera in the region of Basilicata, in southern Italy, which is renowned for its “Sassi,” the cave dwellings that were inhabited for thousands of years and are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Pitigliano and Matera share many similarities: both were first settled during prehistoric times, both possess an intricate network of underground caves and tunnels used for different purposes, and both boast unique buildings which seem to rise from their surroundings and blend in seamlessly with nature.

How Tufo Shaped Pitigliano

Tufo is a form of volcanic rock, that provides the foundation of Pitigliano and other towns in southern Tuscany known as Tufo Towns.

Tufo has played a crucial part in Pitigliano’s history, culture, and architecture since ancient times. Most buildings in town are made of tufo, and Pitigliano’s famous Vie Cave (Cave Streets) are one of its most striking testimonials of tunnels, dug into the tufo rock by the Etruscans centuries ago and used for trade, communication, and religious ceremonies. They connect Pitigliano with other towns such as Sovana and Sorano. Three of these caves are the most well-known: Via Cava di Fratenuti, Via Cava di San Giuseppe, and Via Cava di San Rocco, among many more!

Pitigliano’s Tufo heritage includes an intricate network of underground wells and cellars carved by its population from within its rock face, to store food, water, create stable, microclimate, as well as provide protection and survival during wars and sieges. Inhabitants would hide in these wells for extended periods, shielded from danger. Many such wells remain accessible today (just like the one that my guides —Cesare and Giorgio—had showed me! They provide a window into Pitigliano’s history and culture. One particularly interesting well is known as Pozzo della Fortuna, which was constructed during 16th Century with a spiral staircase leading down 25 meters (82 feet)!

Tufo comes in yellowish or reddish hues depending on which minerals it contains, giving Pitigliano its cozy warmth.

Tufo is a key feature of Pitigliano’s character and appeal, and makes the town an exceptional tourist destination. When visiting Pitigliano you can admire both its aesthetics and creativity through tufo architecture as well as discover all its mysteries and rich past.

Pitigliano’s History and Jewish Heritage

Did you know that Pitigliano is often referred to as the Little Jerusalem? This charming town has an intriguing past shaped by various cultures and influences over time. Let’s revisit some of its history.

First inhabited by the Etruscans, Pitigliano showcases remnants of their civilization, including vie cave, necropolises, and temples. The Romans, Lombards, and especially the Aldobrandeschi family, who ruled until the 14th century, all played key roles in shaping its destiny and creating Pitigliano as it stands today.

Pitigliano fell under the rule of the Orsini family in 1293 and quickly flourished under their watch. It became a bustling center, with remarkable structures like its fortress, aqueduct, and cathedral being constructed. Perhaps most notably, the Orsini family provided sanctuary to Jewish communities fleeing Papal States and Medici domains. These communities found safe havens in Pitigliano , where they could practice their religion, trade goods, and become integral components of the social fabric. The Jewish residents, even built a synagogue, ritual baths, bakeries, butcher shops, and wine cellars, significantly enhancing Pitigliano’s culture. At one point, it was one of Italy’s largest and most prosperous Jewish communities!

However, upon its incorporation into the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in 1608, Pitigliano saw an end to this situation. The authorities established a ghetto for Jewish inhabitants under orders from the Medici and Pope. Despite this restrictive measure, the Jews of Pitigliano still enjoyed some privileges and freedoms, thanks to the local rulers’ generosity and the Christian majority’s tolerance. The Jewish community contributed significantly to both the economy and culture, through activities such as spice trading, wheat and textiles trading, and money lending.

The Italian unification in 1861 led to Jewish emancipation, prompting many in Pitigliano to move to larger cities, and leave Pitigliano behind. 

In 1938, racial laws forced Pitigliano’s Jewish population to hide in the countryside with the help of the locals. 

Today, only a few Jewish families remain in Pitigliano. Its ancient ghetto has since been turned into a museum, serving as an eyewitness account of its turbulent history and heritage.

Dante’s Inferno: How a Medieval Poet Shaped Pitigliano’s History

Prior to my trip for Pitigliano, I researched articles and books about this beautiful town on the web; what I discovered astounded me: Pitigliano had an unexpected link to Dante Alighieri, the creator of The Divine Comedy, whose literary masterpiece remains one of humanity’s enduring classics.

Dante Alighieri was an Italian poet, philosopher, and political activist of the 13th and 14th centuries. He wrote The Divine Comedy to document his journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. Along the way, he encountered historical and mythical characters such as Count Ugolino della Gherardesca a Pisan nobleman condemned to Hell’s ninth Circle.

What is Dante’s connection to Pitigliano? His connection stems from the Aldobrandeschi family, rulers of Pitigliano, and relatives of the Gherardesca family. Dante meets Count Ugolino Gherardesca in Hell, and later in Purgatory. Dante praises the Aldobrandeschi family for their staunch support of the Emperor Napoleon III and the Ghibelline faction (Dante even refers to Guglielmo Aldobrandeschi as “Grand Tuscan”), which underscores their deep ties.

In summary, Dante’s connection to Pitigliano is woven through historical figures, political allegiances, and familial bonds, making it a fascinating aspect of both literary and local history.

What to see and Do in Pitigliano

Pitigliano invites visitors to discover its narrow streets, ancient buildings, and hidden corners. Here are some key attractions not to be missed during their stay:

The Orsini Palace: Pitigliano’s most stunning building was once home to the Orsini family who ruled from 13th to 17th century. Boasting Renaissance facade, medieval tower, and baroque chapel features, this palace houses its Museum of Orsini Palace which features paintings, sculptures, weapons and furniture from different eras. You can also visit Diocese Museum which showcases religious artifacts from surrounding churches and the Cathedral.

The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul: Pitigliano’s main church dates back to 13th century, featuring Romanesque-Gothic style with a simple facade and bell tower. Inside you can marvel at frescoes by Pietro Aldi, Francesco Nasini, Antonio Nasini. Altar pieces, frescoes by many other artists such as Francesco Nasini. It also houses Saint Rocco as patron saint of Pitigliano!

The Vie Cave: These are ancient roads carved into the tufo rock by the Etruscans, who inhabited the area before the Romans. These trails connect Pitigliano with other nearby towns, such as Sovana and Sorano, and they are surrounded by a mysterious and enchanting atmosphere. Via Cave are the perfect hiking destination (or trekking, as my European friends call it). Along these routes, you’ll encounter Etruscan tombs, temples, and sculptures, captivating remnants of a great civilianization. 🚶‍♂️🚴‍♀️

The Arches: Carosello in Pitigliano is an annual cultural event which unites its community in celebration. As Carosello takes place across various central locations, the arches serve as iconic landmarks that serve to frame local artisans, musicians, and performers for an engaging cultural showcase.

In Pitigliano, “Carosello” captures the essence of celebration under its iconic arches, where history meets modern festivity in a charming display of local pride.”Carosello” made waves on Italian television as well, borrowing its name for entertaining sketches during commercial breaks. Similar to Pitigliano’s celebration, this television version also prioritized community and engagement while its visual backdrop of arches recalling Pitigliano’s main square further enhanced the sense of festivity associated with both festivities.

Food and Wine Specialties

Pitigliano is famous for its white wine, called Bianco di Pitigliano, which has a DOC (Denomination of Controlled Origin) status. The wine is made from local grapes, such as Trebbiano, Grechetto, and Malvasia, and it has a dry and fruity taste. You can taste the wine in the many cellars and taverns in Pitigliano or buy a bottle to take home.

Sfratto di Pitigliano: Imagine a pastry that tells a story of survival and courage. That’s what sfratto di Pitigliano is. It’s a Jewish delicacy that dates back to the 17th century when the Jews of Pitigliano were forced to leave their homes and move into a ghetto.

The officials would bang on their doors with a wooden stick to warn them they were being evicted. As a tribute to their ordeal and resilience, the Jews of Pitigliano baked this pastry as a reminder. It features a stick-like shape filled with honey, nuts, and citrus peel. It’s crunchy on the outside, but soft and gooey on the inside for a tasty and fragrant treat bridging Tuscany and Israel, through flavors and cultures. You’ll find this treat available in most bakeries and restaurants throughout Pitigliano. 🥮🍯

How to Get There

From Florence: There are a couple of routes when driving from Florence to Pitigliano that you can take. Take Highway A1: From Florence, head southbound on the A1. Follow signs to Rome (Roma); after approximately 130 kilometers, take exit #37 toward Orvieto (Orvieto). Follow local roads from Orvieto to Pitigliano and take in the spectacular Tuscan landscape along your drive! Or alternatively take the State Road 74 directly from Florence. Head south along SS74, passing through towns like Certaldo and Colle di Val d’Elsa on your journey to Siena. From there, follow signs for Grosseto and Pitigliano; although this route takes slightly longer it also offers beautiful sights along its path.

From Siena: When driving from Siena, take the SS2 road which passes through Val d’Orcia and towns such as San Quirico d’Orcia, Pienza and Montalcino for approximately two hours of stunning landscapes: rolling hills, vineyards and cypress trees along your journey. Alternatively, consider taking either of two highway routes: E78 or E80 which offer faster but less scenic travel with journey times around one and one-half hours depending on route chosen.

From Grosseto: If you are taking the bus, you can find direct connections from Grosseto, Orbetello, and Manciano. The bus trip takes about an hour and a half from Grosseto, an hour from Orbetello, and half an hour from Manciano.

Imagine five colorful villages perched on top of rugged Mediterranean Sea cliffs, where time seems to have stopped and culture meets nature–that is Cinque Terre–Italy’s unique treasure!

Cinque Terre, meaning five lands or five towns in Italian, are five ancient fishing villages on Italy’s Riviera just below Genoa in northwest Italy. Dating back to medieval times, when part of the Genoa Republic defended against pirates and invaders with forts and towers, Cinque Terre became increasingly isolated over time. Nowadays, they are accessible via boat, train, or hiking along mule paths that connect them.

Cinque Terre are both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park, drawing millions of tourists each year who come to admire the breathtaking scenery, colorful houses, terraced vineyards and olive groves, charming atmosphere, and delightful atmosphere.

To get a clearer idea of the layout and location of Cinque Terre, please take a look at my customized Google Map created as a resource. As seen here, Cinque Terre comprises the following five villages that run along its coast from north to south: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Each has unique features and attractions, which I will outline further below.

Monterosso al Mare: The largest and most resort-like village of Cinque Terre, with a long sandy beach, a promenade, and larger hotels. It has a historical downtown, a convent, and a statue of Neptune. Bear in mind, it is the most popular and crowded village in the region.

Vernazza: The most beautiful and picturesque village of Cinque Terre, with a natural harbor, a sandy beach, and a castle tower. It has narrow alleys, colorful buildings, and a lively piazza. It is also the best base for hiking the Blue Trail.

Corniglia: The only village of Cinque Terre that is not directly on the sea, but on a hilltop surrounded by vineyards. It has a panoramic terrace, a central square, and a Gothic church. It is also the quietest and least touristy village in the region.

Manarola: Manarola, one of Cinque Terre’s smaller villages, earns its reputation for its scenic views and bright houses. Explore its rugged coastline, the small harbor, and the church with the bell tower. Many people consider this the starting point of Via dell’Amore’s romantic trail.

Riomaggiore: The southernmost village of Cinque Terre, closest to La Spezia is Riomaggiore. It has a colorful harbor, where you can see the boats bobbing on the turquoise water, a pebbly beach, where you can relax and sunbathe, and a medieval castle, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the village and the sea. It is also known for its wine production and fishing tradition, so don’t miss the chance to taste the local specialties, such as the anchovies and the Sciacchetrà wine.

Travel between villages by train, or boat, or hike along its famous trails that offer stunning seascape views. Cinque Terre Express trains operate every 20 minutes between Levanto and La Spezia and between all five villages of Cinque Terre.

Train travel is the fastest and easiest way to visit the villages. However, peak hours and weekends may prove quite crowded and noisy. Therefore, opt for other forms of transportation, such as the ferry service, which runs between April and October for scenic sightseeing of villages. Keep in mind that the weather may affect this option, so be sure to check the forecast before going.

For accessing the trails or riding local trains in Cinque Terre, a special pass called a Cinque Terre Card will be necessary.

Cinque Terre Cards: Your Ticket to Five Spectacular Villages

The Cinque Terre Card comes in two varieties, the Cinque Terre Trekking Card and the Cinque Terre Treno MS Card. Let’s dive in to see if this card is worth it.

1. Cinque Terre Trekking Card

Key Features and Benefits:

1. Cost: €7.50 for 1 day, €14.50 for 2 days
2. Access: This card gives you access to hiking trails and the national park area, covers bus service between villages, offers free toilet use and guided tours, and reduces admission fees for Civic Museums in La Spezia.

What It Doesn’t Include:

While this covers bus services, it does not cover train services between villages.

2. Cinque Terre Treno MS Card

Key Features and Benefits:

1. Cost: €18.20 for 1 day, €33 for 2 days, and €47 for 3 days
2. Features of the Trekking Card: The Cinque Terre Train Card includes all the features of the Cinque Terre Trekking Card.
3. Access: The all-inclusive pass includes unlimited train travel on the La Spezia – Cinque Terre – Levanto line.
4. Convenience: This card provides extra flexibility and convenience when exploring villages by train, as well as hiking and bus, especially when the trails are closed off due to maintenance or landslides.

The Card is Non-Transferable:

Each card is personal and non-transferable, requiring you to write your name on its back before showing it to inspectors with a valid ID card. Validity lasts until midnight on its issued day.

Is the Cinque Terre Card Worth it?

Of course, it depends on your travel plans. If you’re going to stay mostly in one area, it may not be worth it. However, if you’re going to take the train or bus multiple times or hike the Blue Path, it is well worth the cost for the convenience it provides.

Hike to Cinque Terre for Medium to Good Fitness Level Travelers

But if you are into a more challenging hike, no doubt that the Sentiero Azzurro or Blue Trail is for you. This tougher trail goes through rugged terrains and wonderfully panoramic vistas. You will conquer hills, cross charming bridges, and witness its unique beauty along the way! Lots of photo ops here! 

Plus, you’ll return with stories to share and memories to cherish. Whether you are an experienced hiker or someone who prefers a slower, easier pace, these dual hiking options ensure everyone can savor the magic of Cinque Terre and Tuscany to meet their needs. Here is a breakdown of each section:

Riomaggiore to Manarola

This section of the trail, commonly referred to as Via dell’Amore or Lover’s Lane, is one of the easiest and shortest. At only 1.5 kilometers long and taking 30 minutes to complete, its flat and paved surface provides stunning ocean views and romantic walks along its length. At Bar dell’Amore—a small kiosk offering drinks and snacks—stop off for drinks/snacks before writing your name on a padlock to symbolically secure it to the fence as a symbol of eternal love.

Manarola to Corniglia. This 3-km trail segment takes roughly one hour and follows mostly flat coastal terrain with some gentle slopes and stairs along its route, passing vineyards, olive groves, scenic views of villages and the sea. Corniglia stands out as being unique as being accessible only via climbing 377 steps or taking a shuttle bus service from its train station.

Corniglia to Vernazza

This moderate section of the trail measures 4 km and takes around 1.5 hours to walk. Although challenging and steeper than earlier sections, this stretch also boasts breathtaking landscapes: hilly terrain with forests and terraces along its route, beautiful coastal views from Vernazza village itself, as well as its natural harbor, castle, church, and piazza by the seaside.

Vernazza to Monterosso al Mare

This section of the trail is the toughest and longest, stretching 3.5 km over 1.5 hours and providing spectacular coastal and sea views from every turn. Monterosso, the largest and most accessible village, boasts a long sandy beach and a flat historic center. It’s an excellent spot for ending your hike with a refreshing swim in the ocean and some tasty gelato.

Where to Start Your Hike

Exploring these villages and trails can be done in two ways: either starting from south to north (easy to difficult), or starting from north to south.

Spend about one hour at each village before continuing along your trail. This hike covers 11 kilometers over five hours from Monterosso to Riomaggiore and back again. As another choice, you could travel in the opposite direction: from Monterosso back toward Riomaggiore from north to south. Start your hike by tackling the toughest section first and steadily move towards the easier ones, ensuring a gradual and successful conquest of every challenge.

Taking part in hikes and walks in this locality demands both physical fitness and good health, along with proper footwear and clothing—like resilient hiking boots. Be mindful of your physical limitations and weather conditions before beginning this trail. You could also take the train or boat between villages for some of the sections. Regardless of your choices, you’re sure to have an incredible adventure!

Also, consider visiting only certain villages by train or boat. Note that Corniglia may be difficult to reach with public transit, while Riomaggiore features an uninviting descent down into its harbor.

Hiking along Cinque Terre’s stunning coast will reward you with incredible sea and cliff views, villages from above and below, and food & wine tasting opportunities (such as trofie al pesto, acciughe al limone, and sciacchetra)! 

Easy Hike to Cinque Terre

If you prefer a flat and paved trail, the one between Riomaggiore and Manarola boasts stunning sea views and takes only around 20 minutes. Always make sure to double-check that the specific location is open first, as the place can sometimes close due to landslides or maintenance work. 

Customizing Your Experience

So there it is—two options for hiking the Cinque Terre: one is tailored toward those with average fitness levels while another may better suit experienced hikers. No matter your hiking style—from experienced hikers to casual strollers—the options highlighted in this article ensure everyone can fully experience the magic of Cinque Terre and Tuscany at their own pace!

Cinque Terre and Tuscany 5-Day Itinerary

Now that you have chosen your hiking option, let’s explore the 5-day itinerary I promised you earlier. Great, let’s start on day 1. You will start your trip from your base: Florence, Pisa, or Lucca. I suggest Pisa. The other 2 require a much longer stay to truly enjoy them:

1 night in Pisa, 2 nights in Riomaggiore, 1 night in either Vernazza or Monterosso, and 1 night back in Pisa.

Day 1: Arrive in Pisa and Explore the City

Your journey begins in Pisa, an ideal starting point to discover Cinque Terre and Tuscany. Thanks to an international airport and a well-connected train station, reaching that destination from anywhere around the world should not be a problem. Once in Pisa, take advantage of exploring all that the city offers you. Iconic landmarks include the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Cathedral, the Baptistery as well as Piazza dei Miracoli (Square of Miracles), which is part of its UNESCO World Heritage Site status and will leave you speechless!

Pisa is more than just its iconic Leaning Tower; it is also a vibrant and charming city, filled with an abundance of history and culture. Wander the medieval streets and squares, admire elegant palaces and churches, visit museums and galleries, sample local specialties such as cecina (thin chickpea pancake), or try some pappa al pomodoro (bread and tomato soup) for yourself. Pisa provides an excellent introduction to Italian life and cuisine—and an ideal way to start any visit or journey!

Another option is to begin your trip in Florence. After landing in Italy, take a train straight to Florence and enjoy the afternoon/night in the city. You will be spending your first night in Florence, and make the trek out to Cinque Terre on day two, following this itinerary.

Day 2: Take a Train to Riomaggiore and Hike to Manarola

On your second day, depart from Pisa/Florence and head to La Spezia. From there, take a local train to Cinque Terre.

Your Cinque Terre adventure begins in Riomaggiore, the easternmost village. Here you’ll spend two nights and travel between villages by boat, train, or hiking the famous trails I mentioned earlier. Riomaggiore is a picturesque town featuring colorful houses that cascade down a steep ravine to an intimate harbor. Visitors to Riomaggiore can also explore its botanical garden and bird-watching center. In addition, you can visit churches like San Giovanni Battista from the 13th Century, the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta from the 15th Century, as well as the 16th-century Castle of Riomaggiore. From either location, you can admire views of both the sea and cliffs, whether from marinas or castles.

By hiking along the Via dell’Amore (Lover’s Path), which clings to the cliffside and offers breathtaking seaside views, visitors of Cinque Terre can experience one of the world’s most romantic and photogenic walks—an essential experience for anyone staying in Riomaggiore and wanting to reach Manarola. This hike should take approximately 20 minutes with flat terrain throughout.

Manarola is renowned for its vineyards and the sweet wine called Sciacchetra. You can sample some at local bars or visit the medieval church of San Lorenzo. Take in its colorful houses and boats that line its shore, and watch as Manarola lights up with a warm glow at sunset!

Day 3: Take a Boat to Vernazza and Corniglia

On your third day in Cinque Terre, you can continue exploring by boat from Riomaggiore to Vernazza—one of the most stunning villages. Vernazza boasts both a natural harbor and a castle to offer visitors. Stroll along its waterfront promenade to admire the fishing boats and vibrant houses along with visiting Santa Margherita d’Antiochia church with its Gothic facade and bell tower.

By climbing the whopping 377 steps or taking a shuttle bus from the train station, you can access Corniglia, which sits perched atop a high cliff surrounded by vineyards. Corniglia boasts an idyllic atmosphere and features a magnificent panoramic terrace with incredible views across all five villages at once. To fully enjoy your last day, you should spend it exploring Corniglia. Visit San Pietro church with its Baroque style and rose window. Taste some local specialties such as honey, figs, and anchovies!

Day 4: Take a Train to Monterosso al Mare and Relax on the Beach

On the fourth day, you will hop on a train from Corniglia and head westward to Monterosso al Mare—the westernmost village of Cinque Terre. Here, you will spend one night. Monterosso al Mare is one of the larger and more touristy villages, featuring long sandy beaches, numerous hotels and restaurants, kayak rental or paddle boarding opportunities along the coastline, or exploring its historical center complete with medieval tower, convent and church with striped marble columns.

Monterosso al Mare offers an ideal spot to experience both sun and sea while sampling some of the Cinque Terre’s delicious seafood, like trofie al pesto (a type of pasta with basil sauce), acciughe al limone (anchovies with lemon) or fritto misto (fried seafood).

Day 5: Take a Train Back to Pisa

You will return to Pisa on your fifth and final day, where you will spend one more night before embarking on the short train journey back to Lucca (which is only 1 hour and 20 minutes away).

While there, you can stroll cobblestone streets, admire Romanesque churches, and climb Guinigi Tower for breathtaking panoramic city views. Also, enjoy lunch at a trattoria where you will sample local food and wine before returning by train to Pisa and having a farewell dinner before packing your memories away for the flight home.

Morning: Begin your “wineventure” in Florence by picking up your rental car and setting off towards Grassina.

Once a bustling hub for local washerwomen, whose rhythmic pounding of clothes echoed through the narrow streets, the village has kept an authentic charm that transports visitors to a simpler time.

Chiesa di San Martino a Strada (Church of San Martin) is a historic church with a single nave and a pitched roof. Inside, you will find a painting attributed to the school of Verrocchio—depicting the Virgin and several saints. What to See in Greve

Greve’s triangular-shaped square, Piazza Matteotti, serves as the town’s main point of reference. Despite not being a perfect square, it remains the focal point of Greve. What sets this place apart, aside from its unusual shape, is the portico that wraps around three sides of the square. This portico continues to house boutique shops, artisan workshops, and delightful restaurants. The beauty of Greve lies in its compact size—you can easily explore the entire town on foot. And right in the heart of the square, near the city hall, stands a large statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano. If you are from New York/New Jersey this name will sound very familiar…. Yep, we are talking about the renowned explorer who discovered the Hudson Bay in New York and was born just a few kilometers north of Greve. Perhaps you noticed Castello da Verrazzano along the Chiantigiana before reaching Greve?

Greve is also famous for some butcher shops and meat specialties. For example, the renowned Antica Macelleria Falorni is a must-visit butcher shop. But also the Antica Macelleria Cecchini in Panzano in Chianti is renowned worldwide. Led by the legendary butcher Dario Cecchini, this establishment is a must-visit.

Greve hosts several annual events. The Flower Festival typically takes place around May 1st, and the town also celebrates the feast of the Holy Cross, its patron saint, with festivities throughout the year.

Panzano in Chianti

Afternoon: Head to Panzano in the afternoon, and immerse yourself in the idyllic charm of Panzano in Chianti, an idyllic holiday resort at 498 meters above sea level.

History meets charm in Panzano! Explore the 19th-century Santa Maria church, built on a medieval base. Take a photo on its stunning stone staircase and imagine the castle that once stood there (a remnant of the tower is still inside!). Chianti Wine Road – Day 3: Radda in Chianti

On day 3 of the Chianti wine tour itinerary, you will head back on the road towards Radda in Chianti. This lovely town exudes timeless beauty as you admire it from its hilltop location, nestled between the Arbia and Pesa rivers and covered by an intricate web of vineyards.

Radda is synonymous with vineyards. Situated at the center of Tuscany’s Chianti region – dubbed by English expats “Chiantishire”—its location offers spectacular vistas in every direction. Built during the 15th century and later rebuilt after Spanish troops destroyed it, its Palazzo del Podesta’ stands as one of Radda town walls primary landmarks with ceramic coats of arms from noble Radda families adorning its honey-colored facade while Church San Niccolo houses an iconic 15th-century “Madonna and Child,” which came straight from Radda Castle chapel!

Piazza Ferrucci is at the core of Radda, where the remnants of its original castle dominate this iconic square. From here, you can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views reminiscent of medieval Europe.

Apart from being home to the headquarters of the Chianti Consortium (founded in 1924 and Italy’s oldest, symbolized by a black rooster), this little village boasts a splendid medieval center that invites exploration on foot. Not far from Radda lies Gaiole, once an important commercial hub in the past and now a paradise for wine enthusiasts and agriturismo lovers. In the vicinity, you’ll find several fortified dwellings, such as the Pieve di Spaltenna, which houses a precious wooden crucifix dating back to the 1400s, and Castello di Brolio, the Ricasoli family’s residence since the 12th century and still producing excellent Chianti Classico today.

 Radda: Where Vines Rule Supreme 

Radda’s terrain provides ideal conditions for cultivating vines and olive trees, with wine being the mainstay source of income for the local population. Radda’s winemaking traditions have a deep history, and the international community has celebrated the long-standing recognition of Radda wines. Grand Duke Cosimo III officially recognized and established Chianti district boundaries through his Chianti Classico law enacted 300 years ago, marking it as the world’s first legal wine production area. This year marks this anniversary.

What is the Verrucole Fortress?

Verrucole Fortress is a magnificent stone castle perched atop a 600-meter hill and offering unparalleled views of the Apuan Alps, Apennines, and valley below. Constructed around 1000 by Gherardinghi family– a powerful clan which once ruled over this region- the Verrucole Fortress served to defend them against rival Bacciano clan, Florentines, Luccheseses and Estensi families in defense against them using this fortress to defend them using this fortress against rival Bacciano clan; Florentines used this fortress to defend themself against Florentines from Florentines while Florentines made use of it against Florentines Florentines against Florentines as well.

Verrucole Fortress comprises two sections, Rocca Tonda and Rocca Quadra. Rocca Tonda dates back to the 11th century; its large octagonal tower resembles that of nearby Castle Aghinolfi. To enter, you must climb a steep stone staircase leading into its Lord’s rooms on two floors, which still contain remains from kitchens, living quarters, guest chambers, etc. At its foot was once an impressive chapel where two columns with carved capitals could be found!

The Rocca Quadra, built during the 13th century, is the more recent and lower portion of this fortress, featuring a rectangular tower, wall, gate, and crenellated enclosure enclosing an inner courtyard featuring wells and bread ovens; from here you can access crenelated walls which run along its edges connecting each part of this fortress.

Verrucole Fortress offers more than just a museum visit; it is an immersive living history experience! Explore its towers and rooms while learning how soldiers and nobles lived there; take part in exhibits or activities such as catapult-building workshops, falconry shows or archery lessons; dress in medieval costume to feel like you’re a knight or lady – the fortress even has its own chapel dedicated to Saint Peter and Saint Paul!

In the 17th century, this fortress fell into disrepair and lay abandoned for centuries before volunteers in the 1980s began restoration efforts and turned it into a living museum. Nowadays, visitors can come and see it for themselves and get an insight into Tuscany’s medieval past and culture. Are you ready to experience life as it was back in the Middle Ages? How to Visit the Verrucole Fortress

The Castle stands atop Verrucole Village in Garfagnana. To reach it from Lucca exit of A11 Firenze-Mare highway, follow first SS12 Abetone/Brennero then SS435 of Garfagnana until Castelnuovo; from here follow signs for San Romano where it’s easy to climb Verrucole. It is open between April and October from 10 am to 7 pm daily and admission fees for adults is EUR8 while children 6-17 can enter free of charge; for tours/audio guides you may book guided tour/audio guides at additional costs; alternatively you may reach it by car/bus/foot from Verrucole village itself or through its official website for more details.

Fun Facts and Legends about the Verrucole Fortress

The name Verrucole comes from the Latin word “verruca”, which means “wart”. This refers to the shape of the hill on which the fortress stands.

The fortress was the scene of a famous battle in 1306, when the Florentines, led by Dante Alighieri, attacked the Ghibelline forces of the Gherardinghi and the Ubertini. The battle ended with a victory for the Ghibellines, and a retreat for the Florentines.

Verrucole’s name derives from Latin verruca, meaning wart. This refers to the hill on which stands this fortress.

The fortress also boasts a connection to Dante Alighieri, the famous creator of the Divine Comedy. Just like in Pitigliano we found some interesting connection to Dante, Verrucole in 1306 became famously associated with an epic battle when Florentines led by Dante Alighieri engaged the Ghibelline forces of Gherardinghi and Ubertini fortress to attack. Unfortunately for Florentines, however, the battle turned decisively in favor of Ghibellines who eventually won, while Florentines were forced into retreat.

Haunted Fortress

Did you know that fhe fortress is haunted by the ghost of a young girl killed by her lover, a soldier at the fortress? According to legend, her father had arranged for a marriage between the girl and another man; instead she ran away with her lover; who unfortunately betrayed her, stabbing her fatally in a tower, while still calling his name! Now her ghost still roams freely through the fortress looking for him while crying his name aloud.

In this post, I provide two itineraries that will lead you through some of the finest destinations in Tuscany at your own pace in seven days:

1. The first itinerary features iconic destinations, including Florence—the birthplace of the Renaissance with the Duomo and Uffizi Gallery; San Gimignano, with its 14 towers, rises like a timeless Manhattan atop nearby hills; Siena, a medieval city with a stunning cathedral and lively piazza; Pisa with its Leaning Tower and Miracle Square; and Lucca, with its intact Renaissance walls and much more.

• The second itinerary focuses on Florence and life in the countryside, where you can enjoy scenic landscapes, local cuisine, and rural activities. Take three days to explore Florence, where you can visit its artistic and cultural treasures, such as the Accademia Gallery, home to Michelangelo’s David, stroll across the historic Ponte Vecchio bridge with its jewelry shops, and discover the Basilica of Santa Croce, the resting place of many famous Italians. Later, escape to the countryside and explore the nature and culture of the rural areas, such as the Chianti region, known for its famous wines and olive oils, as well as the picturesque towns and landscapes of Val d’Orcia and Val di Chiana.

7 Days in Tuscany

Itinerary 1 – Day 1: Explore Florence, the Cradle of the Renaissance

Imagine that your Tuscany journey begins on a Sunday morning. Take a taxi or walk (if it is close enough, you may only need to walk from the station to your hotel). To verify your location, download the Florence Map. Check in, drop off your luggage, and get ready to explore the city. You only have a few minutes before lunch, so you decide to walk into the historic center and stop at a street food place (stuffed focaccia is all the rage in Florence!) for a bite to eat.

Afternoon: Visit the Duomo—the iconic Florence cathedral—and admire the impressive dome designed by Brunelleschi. You can climb the bell tower or dome for panoramic views to better see the city. Then, see the famous bronze doors decorated with biblical scenes at the Baptistery. This is one of Florence’s oldest buildings. You can then walk to the Piazza della Signoria and visit the Palazzo Vecchio which was the former seat for the government and the Loggia dei Lanzi an open-air gallery of sculptures. You’ll find a replica here of Michelangelo’s David. The original is in the Accademia Gallery. You can either visit the Accademia to see the masterpiece or you can save it for another time.

Spend the last part of your day strolling along the Arno and crossing the Ponte Vecchio. This is the oldest and most famous bridge in Florence. It’s lined with jewelers and offers romantic views. As you stroll along the Arno, admire the colorful buildings and the reflections in the water. Cross the bridge to browse through the souvenir, jewelry, and art shops. Take photos of the beautiful views and architecture. It’s dinnertime, so you search for a restaurant or trattoria to enjoy some authentic Tuscan food. Enjoy every mouthful of your pasta or Florentine steak with a glass of Chianti wine. Finish your meal by enjoying a scoop or slice of gelato (check the list of best gelato shops in Florence here). It was a wonderful afternoon spent in Florence. You’ll be busy tomorrow, so get a good night’s sleep.

Itinerary 1 – Day 2: Must-See Marvels in Florence

Florence is a city that offers so much to see and do that you might feel overwhelmed by the choices. Here are some must-see attractions you can choose to see during your stay in Florence. Art & History

Galleria degli Uffizi

Uffizi Gallery, one of the most famous art museums in the world, is a must for art lovers. Online tickets are available to visit the gallery. Tickets cost 25 euros each, and you can enter the gallery at any time. It is a popular museum and there are often long lines, especially during the peak season. You can avoid long lines by paying 4 euros extra and booking a specific slot. Spend at least two hours to see the most important pieces. The museum is open from 8:15 am to 6:50 pm. The gallery features masterpieces by Michelangelo Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci and other Renaissance artists. One highlight is The Birth of Venus. The Annunciation and The Adoration of the Magi are also worth mentioning. The paintings, sculptures, and drawings that fill the room gallery will leave you speechless.

Duomo

Start your day with the Florence Cathedral (Duomo), the symbol of the city and the world’s largest brick dome. You can climb to the top of the dome for incredible views. But be prepared for narrow passages and 463 steps. The Cathedral is free, but you will need to purchase a ticket to access the Dome, the Bell Tower and the Baptistry Museum, and Crypt. The Brunelleschi Pass is the best option. It costs €18 online or €20 in person and allows you to visit these attractions within three days. You can purchase tickets online or in person at the ticket counter. Reservations are required for the Dome, which is open between 8:30 am and 7 pm. The Baptistery is one of Florence’s oldest buildings, and its bronze doors are stunning. The Baptistery’s hours are 8:15 am to 10:15 am and 11:15 am to 6:30 pm.

Accademia Gallery

You can see the original David statue of Michelangelo at the Accademia Gallery. The gallery houses other works by Michelangelo, and many stunning other sculptures and paintings. 

The size, expression, and detail of David will amaze you. To avoid long lines, you can purchase the tickets online. I recommend spending an hour in the gallery, which is open between 8:15 am and 6:50 pm. Sightseeing, Food and Shopping

Palazzo Vecchio

The historic Palazzo Vecchio, which is the city hall, welcomes visitors interested in Florence’s history or politics. It is a beautiful example of Renaissance and medieval architecture. The Palazzo also contains many treasures and artworks. Visitors have the option to explore the palace on their own, or they can join a tour. The palace is open daily from 9 am to 7 pm. Entrance is 14 euros. The main square in Florence, Piazza della Signoria is a great place to admire the sculptures. This open-air museum features a replica of Michelangelo’s David, as well as the Fountain of Neptune and the Loggia Dei Lanzi.

Basilica di Santa Croce

You can also visit the largest Franciscan Church in the world, the Basilica di Santa Croce. Buried in the basilica are the tombs of Michelangelo and other notable figures, including Machiavelli, Galileo, and Rossini. While paying your respects at their tombs, you can appreciate the beautiful frescoes in the interior. The basilica is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

Medici Chapels

The Medici Chapels are part of the Basilica of San Lorenzo, the official church of the Medici family, patrons, and rulers of Florence for centuries. Here you’ll find magnificent tombs and monuments designed by Michelangelo, as well as other artworks by Donatello, Luca della Robbia, and Verrocchio.

Bargello Museum

They built the Bargello Museum in old barracks from the 13th century. The museum has an impressive collection of Renaissance sculptures, including works by Michelangelo and Donatello. Here you can also admire the original bronze panels of the Baptistery’s door. Created by Ghiberti and Brunelleschi in 1401, it is stunning. The Duomo and Uffizi are both in Florence’s historic center, just a short walk from each other, and other attractions like the Ponte Vecchio and the Uffizi. In one afternoon, you can explore both and get a pretty good sense of Florence’s amazing cultural heritage.

Ponte Vecchio

 There are many shops on the bridge that sell jewelry, art, and souvenirs. Great time for a photo op (especially when the sun sets, as the lights reflect off the waterand the sky turns pink) and do some shopping. If you cross the bridge, you will get to Boboli Gardens and Pitti Palace.

Gelato at Vivoli

After visiting the museums and the monuments, treat yourself to an authentic Italian gelato at Vivoli. I compiled a complete list of the best gelato shops in Florence (including the winners of prestigious awards). You will find it refreshing…

Vivoli is a renowned gelateria and one of the oldest in Florence. It offers a variety of flavors, from classic to exotic. You can choose your favorite flavor or try something new. A scoop of gelato costs 2.5 euros, and the gelateria is open from 7:30 am to 11:30 pm. 

San Lorenzo Market

The bustling San Lorenzo Market is a great place to learn about the culture and food of Florence. The market has two sections, the indoor market and the outdoor market. Indoors, you can find fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meats, breads, wines. Also, you can taste some Tuscan specialties from one of the many restaurants and stalls, such as ribollita, lampredotto, and Panzanella. At the outdoor market, on the other hand, you’ll find local crafts, leather products, clothing, accessories, and souvenirs. The market is open every day from 10 am to 6:30 pm, except for Sundays and public holidays.

Boboli Gardens – What better way to end your busy day than at the Boboli Gardens? A tranquil and relaxing way to end the day indeed. The gardens are behind Pitti Palace: a masterwork of landscape design with lush greenery and impressive sculptures. They also feature fountains and grottos.

Itinerary 1 – Day 4: Siena

It’s your fourth day in Tuscany: time to explore the surrounding countryside and some of the picturesque towns and villages. Your first stop will be Siena. Head to Siena early in the day.

Siena

Siena, just a short drive from Florence, is one of the most striking cities in Tuscany. Known for its medieval architecture and the glorious Duomo, Siena is also famous for the biannual horse race called the Palio. It’s a short, spectacular race. If you are there in July, don’t miss it!

The narrow streets are a great place to walk and see the beautiful churches and palaces. Torre del Mangia is the tall tower in the middle of Piazza del Campo, the main square where all tourists and locals gather. You can climb to the top for a breathtaking view of the city and surrounding areas. 

Spend Your Evening in Florence

After a day trip to Siena, you can return to Florence in the afternoon and resume your exploration of the city. You can choose one of the must-see attractions that you have not visited yet, or you can revisit your favorite ones.

If you are feeling tired from the day, you can also relax like a true Italian. Look for a cozy cafe in the historic center and enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine. Watch the people passing by and admire the beauty and the charm of the city. Itinerary 1 – Day 5: San Gimignano and Chianti

How to Visit San Gimignano from Florence

San Gimignano looks like something out of a fairytale. San Gimignano is one of Tuscany’s most beautiful hill towns, known as the Medieval Manhattan for its amazing towers that have stood tall for centuries. A whopping 14 towers rise above the skyline. It also has well-preserved medieval buildings and walls. 

What to see: Visit the Collegiate Church and the Civic Museum. Climb one of the towers such as the Torre Grossa for a panoramic look at the countryside. The entry fee for the Torre Grossa is 9 euros, the Duomo 4 euros, and the Palazzo Comunale 6 euros. The Torre Grossa is open from 10 am to 7:30 pm, the Duomo from 10 am to 5 pm, and the Palazzo Comunale from 11 am to 5:30 pm. Some of the local delicacies you can try are the Vernaccia Wine and saffron. Do swing by the local tourism office for more information on what to do and see in San Gimignano.

Later, enjoy a Chianti wine tour and taste the fruity and light wine paired with local delicacies. Visit some of the picturesque villages and wineries in the region. You can find many options for wine tours online, such as this one or this one.

Itinerary 1 – Day 6: Pisa

It’s day 6 and you are back at your hotel in Florence. Today, you will head to Pisa.

Pisa offers much more than just its famous Leaning Tower. It is a city rich with culture, history, and cuisine, and with lots of events all year round. It also has a Marina – Marina di Pisa—a suburb of Pisa on the shore. You can reach it by following the bike trail from the city center of Pisa. Here are a few suggestions for your last day in Pisa.

How to Get to Pisa

• By public transportation: The train from Florence to Pisa is the easiest, cheapest route – it only takes about 1 hour. You can buy tickets online or at the train station. 
•  By car: You can park your car in one of the public garages or lots outside the city center. If you are staying at a hotel with parking, you can leave it there, but they will probably charge you a daily fee. You can walk from the train station or the parking lot to the Piazza dei Miracoli, where you’ll find the Leaning Tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, and the Camposanto.

Some people only spend half a day in Pisa, and then want to move on. If that’s the case for you, head to Lucca in the afternoon.

Itinerary 1 – Day 7: Lucca

It’s your last day. I strongly recommend exploring Lucca. The walled city of Lucca is full of surprises. Lucca is a gorgeous town that is often overlooked. Lucca has a reputation for its beautifully preserved Renaissance walls, elegant churches, and lively atmosphere. I spent a few days there and loved it!

Biking is a great way to discover Lucca. Rent a bicycle and cruise along the 4 km long and 12 meter wide walls. Stop at the gates and bastions to admire the view of the city and countryside. Visit the Guinigi Tower with its garden of holm oaks and the Clock Tower which houses the oldest clock mechanism on the planet.

The Cathedral of San Martino is another highlight of Lucca. It dates back to the 11th century. It has a beautiful facade, an interior with rich details, and even a museum. According to legend, Nicodemus carved the Volto Santo, a famous wooden crucifix. You can also see the tomb of Ilaria del Carretto a masterpiece in Gothic sculpture.

Lucca has a vibrant nightlife and delicious local cuisine. You can try some typical dishes such as Buccellato, sweet bread with anise and raisins; the farro zuppa (a soup made with spelled beans and spelled), and Tordelli, a type of ravioli topped with meat sauce. There are also many bars, restaurants, and cafes where you can relax.

Lucca makes a great day-trip destination from Florence or Pisa. Its medieval charm, artistic heritage, and vibrant atmosphere will appeal to both adults and children. Do not miss this wonderful town.

Itinerary 1 – Day 8: Departure Day

End this itinerary with a leisurely walk and say arrivederci to this magical region. There you have it. Your dream Tuscany vacation, tailored to your needs and wants. Itinerary 2: Exploring the Countryside Bliss

With this alternate itinerary, you will spend the first 3 days in Florence, and the last 4 in the countryside. Follow the tips in Itinerary 1 for Florence.

After three days of marveling at the artistic wonders of Florence, it’s time to discover the beauty of the Tuscan countryside. On day 4, you’ll embark on an enchanting journey through the heart of Tuscany, where rolling hills, vineyards, and charming villages await.

Itinerary 2 – Day 4: Explore the Chianti Region and Other Wine Areas

Start your countryside adventure with a wine lover’s dream: a tour of the renowned Chianti region and other wine areas. You can taste the world-famous Chianti Classico and visit the premier vineyards where they produce Chianti. Check the Chianti Wine Road Itinerary for all the details. There are many excellent wineries in Tuscany offering wine tours. These are some of the most famous ones:

Avignonesi: Avignonesi is a winery near Montepulciano and Cortona. Offering innovative wines like Chianti Classico and Brunello di Montalcino and tours, tastings, cooking classes, and other activities with over 16,000 reviews earning it a 4.5-star rating – not bad considering they only opened three years ago!

Antinori is one of Italy’s oldest and most esteemed wine producers, dating back to 1385. They boast an elegant modern winery in Chianti called Antinori nel Chianti Classico where they produce some iconic wines, like Tignanello and Solaia. Check their website for tours and events.

Biondi Santi, Tenuta Il Greppo: This is the winery that invented the Brunello di Montalcino wine, one of the most refined and prestigious wines in the world. It is in the heart of the Montalcino area and has a long and noble history. Montalcino Winery also offers guided tours and tastings, by appointment only.

After enjoying lunch at one winery, your wine-infused adventure continues as you visit cellars and learn more about the winemaking process. Capture beautiful vineyards in late afternoon sunlight to create lasting memories!

Itinerary 2 (option 2)- Day 4: Countryside Retreat

If, instead of the Chianti Wine Road, you’d rather drive around the famous countryside of Val D’Orcia, I recommend visiting Pienza and from there, drive to Montepulciano. The road connecting these two towns is the very one often used in movies and landscape paintings.

Here are a few towns you should visit:

1. Pienza, a small town in the south of Tuscany, is in the famous Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the birthplace of Pope Pius II, who transformed his humble village into the “ideal city of the Renaissance” in the 15th century. Pienza is also renowned for producing pecorino cheese, a delicious sheep’s milk cheese that visitors can taste in many shops and restaurants.

2) Val d’Orcia is a beautiful valley in Tuscany, characterized by rolling hills, vineyards, cypress trees, and medieval villages. It is a landscape that has inspired many artists and photographers, and that represents the essence of Tuscany. Many wineries and cellars offer the opportunity to sample wines from Val d’Orcia, such as Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Some of the most picturesque towns in Val d’Orcia are:

How I Discovered the Magic of Fire at Abbadia San Salvatore

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to celebrate Christmas in a different way? To experience a tradition that goes back centuries and connects you with the spirit of the season? That’s what I did last year, and in this article, you’ll read all about Christmas in Tuscany: Abbadia San Salvatore, a charming town with its annual Torches Festival on Christmas eve.

Abbadia San Salvatore is known as the “City of Torches”, because every December 24th, the whole village comes together to light up huge piles of wood that are built in every corner of the town. These are called “Fiaccole”, and they are not just bonfires. They are symbols of the bond between the people and the land, between the past and the present, between the sacred and the profane.

I arrived in Abbadia San Salvatore on the afternoon of the 24th, after a scenic drive through the hills of Tuscany. The town was buzzing with activity, as everyone was busy preparing for the big night. I checked in at a cozy bed and breakfast, where the owner greeted me warmly and told me a bit about the history of the Torches.

He explained that the Torches are one of the oldest fire festivals in Italy, dating back to the Middle Ages, when the town was under the influence of the powerful Abbey of San Salvatore. The Abbey was founded in the 8th century by a Lombard nobleman, and it became a center of culture and wealth in the region. The Abbey is still one of the main attractions of the town, with its impressive Romanesque architecture and medieval frescoes.

The owner also told me that the Torches are a way of honoring the mountain that dominates the landscape: Mount Amiata, a dormant volcano that gave birth to a fertile land. The inhabitants of Abbadia San Salvatore consider themselves “children of fire”, as they have always lived in harmony with the forces of nature. In fact, until the 1970s, the town was one of the main centers of mercury production in Italy, thanks to the cinnabar mines that were located in the mountain. The Mining Museum Park preserves the memory of this activity, with exhibits, documents, and guided tours of the underground galleries.

The owner invited me to join him and his family for the Ceremony of Ignition, which would start at 6 pm in the main square. He said it was a spectacle not to be missed, as it marked the beginning of the Torches festival. I thanked him for his hospitality and decided to take a walk around the town, to see the Torches before they were lit.

I was amazed by the size and the shape of the Torches, which were up to seven meters high and had a pyramidal form. They were made of logs that were smoothed and woven together, using techniques that were passed down from generation to generation. Each Torch had a name and a meaning, and they represented different aspects of the town’s life and culture. Some were dedicated to saints, others to historical figures, others to local crafts and products. There were Torches for children, for lovers, for travelers, for dreamers. There were Torches that told stories, that made jokes, that expressed wishes. There were Torches that were simple and elegant, and others that were elaborate and colorful.

I felt like I was in a fairy tale, surrounded by these giant wooden sculptures that seemed to have a life of their own. I could sense the pride and the passion that went into creating them, and I could imagine the joy and the warmth that they would bring to the night. I took pictures of some of the most beautiful and original Torches, and I chatted with some of the locals, who were happy to share their stories and their traditions with me.

As the sun was setting, I made my way to the main square, where a large crowd had gathered. The atmosphere was festive and cheerful, as people greeted each other and exchanged greetings. The philharmonic band was playing Christmas songs, and the smell of roasted chestnuts and mulled wine filled the air. I found a spot near the Town Hall, where a huge Torch was standing, waiting for the sacred fire.

At 6 pm, the Ceremony of Ignition began, featuring the “Blessing of Fire” from one of the Abbey priests. He offered prayers and sprinkled holy water onto each Torch before lighting them and creating an impressive sight as flames quickly spread from one Torch to the next! Crowds cheered as Torch Leaders donned traditional costumes and carried torches around town to light the remaining Torches. As we walked the narrow streets, we ran into groups carrying torches and singing “pastorelle,” local Christmas carols. Soon enough, the town lit up with thousands of flames. At one of the Torches, a family had set up a table filled with food and drinks; I happily accepted their invitation and enjoyed sampling their cheese, bread, wine, and sweets – their tradition for celebrating Christmas by sharing food around a fire with neighbors and guests alike – these Torches represented tradition as well as values like hospitality, friendship and simplicity.

I began to understand the true spirit of this fire celebration: light that shines in darkness; fire which warms hearts; love which unites us together and magic from life, stories, and fire itself.

To punish his daughter and her lover in an extreme manner he ordered his men to confine Bianca alive to one small room of the castle with her faithful dog and a wild boar as symbols of rebellion; later he banished Bianca’s stableman forever from their land.

Since that day, Bianca Malaspina’s ghost has been said to wander the castle looking for her lost love. Some say she can often be found dressed in white with long, loose-flowing locks on full moon nights, wandering halls and corridors accompanied by the sounds of her dogs and the boar.

Is it really Bianca sobbing or crying as she hopes for an escape route out of this prison? Who knows! No matter the truth of it all, this legend has made this castle famous and an absolute must-see attraction!

Among the many fascinating stories that surround the castle, none is perhaps more significant than that of the great Italian poet Dante Alighieri. Author of the immortal Divine Comedy, he left an indelible mark on the cultural heritage of these lands, where he stayed for over a year at the court of the Malaspina. In his honor, an ancient chapel of the castle was transformed into his room and, since then, it has been known as “Dante’s Room”. This place, still open to visits, preserves intact the atmosphere of the time, offering a suggestive journey into the past.

The castle also houses a rich library, with over 15,000 volumes, some of which are rare and precious manuscripts. The most remarkable room of the castle is perhaps the throne room, where the Malaspina family received their guests and held their ceremonies. As such his feast day is often celebrated on January 17th with processions, music performances, food offerings, and bonfires as symbols of fertility purification and renewal for the new year ahead.

Sant’Antonio Abate Festival is an ancient pagan ritual that has since been integrated into Christian practice, to commemorate and honor Sant’Antonio Abate while blessing animals, celebrating community spirit, and spreading cheer in one celebration after another.

Palio di Sant’Antonio Abate is an annual horse race honoring Saint Antony Abate held annually on the third Sunday in January at Buti, near Pisa. It is preceded by an extravagant procession featuring people dressed in medieval garb and flags.

February is Carnival month, a festive period leading up to Lent that features masks, costumes, parades and parties galore! Festa della donna: Another event that is fixed in March is the Festa delle Donne, or Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements and rights. It is celebrated on March 8 with various events, such as marches, rallies, concerts, exhibitions, and workshops. In Italy, it is also customary to give yellow mimosa flowers to women as a symbol of appreciation and solidarity. It is the oldest music festival in Italy and one of the oldest in Europe. It takes place in the superb Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze between late April and June and features operas, concerts, ballets, and other cultural events. Giostra del Saraceno: Another event that takes place in May is the Giostra del Saracino, or Joust of the Saracen, a medieval tournament that takes place in Arezzo on the last Sunday of May (and again on the first Sunday of September). It involves four knights representing four districts who have to hit a wooden target held by a rotating figure of a Saracen warrior. The event is accompanied by a colorful procession of people wearing historical costumes.

Luminara di San Ranieri: June is an illuminated month in Tuscany thanks to the magical event known as Luminara di San Ranieri or Candlemas of Saint Ranieri which takes place in Pisa on June 16th. On this night, thousands of candles are decorated across bridges, doors, windows, and boats along the Arno River as part of Luminara di San Ranieri; fireworks and music round out this wonderful experience!

July: Palio di Siena & Puccini Festival

Palio di Siena: One of Tuscany’s most beloved and thrilling events takes place each June: the Palio di Siena or Horse Race of Siena is held twice annually on June 29 and August 13 in Piazza del Campo, Siena’s main square. Ten horses with riders wearing colors of their contrades (districts) compete to claim the palio (banner), preceded by a historical parade filled with people dressed up as medieval knights wearing medieval costumes and flags. It lasts only minutes but offers an incredible atmosphere that cannot be rivaled anywhere.

The Palio is held over four days; on the morning of day one, each participating Contrada (district) receives their horse in an assembly called Tratta and six trials occur between 9 AM and 7:45 PM (7 PM for August). Prova Generale and Provaccia are two trials held during Palio morning. Together, they comprise three laps around Piazza del Campo on an uneven track high above its shell and are called Palio races respectively. From the Mossa, bounded by two ropes, nine Contrades are assembled to form the race’s grid. A lottery determines their order as they line up against each other before entering for their turn at the rincorsa race. When their last Contrada enters for this round and triggers it, the front rope lowered indicating its start; whichever Contrada completes three laps first emerges as victor.

Puccini Festival: July is the month of opera and theater in Tuscany, thanks to the Puccini Festival and the Mercantia. The Puccini Festival is dedicated to the great Tuscan opera composer Giacomo Puccini and takes place in the open-air theater set on the Massaciuccoli lakefront, a truly striking location in Torre del Lago (Lucca). The program of events runs from late July to late August and features some of Puccini’s most famous operas, such as La Bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.

Mercantia Festival: Certaldo Alto’s medieval hill town near Florence hosts an annual street theater festival called Mercantia that brings thousands of spectators each July for performances featuring actors, musicians, dancers, acrobats, clowns puppeteers, and fire eaters transforming Certaldo Alto into an amazing and vibrant stage where anything could happen! The annual celebration draws over 44,000 attendees.

The Bravio delle Botti barrel-rolling race takes place each year on the last Sunday in August in Montepulciano, an Italian hill town known for its wine. Eight teams representing eight districts race heavy wooden barrels uphill along a 1.8km course ending in Piazza Grande. A historical parade featuring people dressed in Renaissance attire precedes this event and the winner receives a cloth painted to honor San Giovanni Decollato as its patron saint.

Rificona Festival: September is the month of lanterns and bicycles in Tuscany thanks to two annual traditions: Rificolona and L’Eroica festivals. One day I decided to visit Montalcino, home of Brunello wine—one of the world’s most celebrated and exquisite vintages. Montalcino is a charming medieval town situated within Siena province in southern Tuscany; it boasts rolling hills, olive groves, vineyards, and breathtaking views across the Val d’Orcia and Maremma valleys. Montalcino also serves as one of the primary producers for Brunello, an esteemed vintage beloved throughout its region and beyond.

I left early in the morning, and I enjoyed the scenic route, admiring the rolling hills, the olive groves, and the vineyards.

As I traveled along, I took pleasure in admiring the scenic route and soon enough I reached Montalcino— an enchanting medieval town perched atop a hill. I parked my car near its iconic fortress that dominates its skyline. 

History of Montalcino

Ferruccio Biondi-Santi was an innovative winemaker who first planted Sangiovese Grosso grapes in Montalcino for cultivation and demonstrated their outstanding aging potential by crafting his inaugural Brunello wine (so-named because of its dark hue when fully aged).

Brunello winemakers refined and perfected its production process through generations. Brunello di Montalcino Wine was granted official recognition and it was one of Italy’s first wines to earn Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG) status – signifying superior quality and regional authenticity – back in 1968.

Brunello di Montalcino’s fame has spread around the world, becoming synonymous with quality wines produced in Tuscany and serving as an ambassador of Tuscan winemaking excellence. Brunello has long been recognized as one of the premier wines worldwide due to its meticulous cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso grapes, traditional winemaking techniques, and exclusive Montalcino terroir – elements which all help maintain its legendary status and increased demand.

This iconic vintage can be traced back to 1888 when Ferruccio Biondi-Santi pioneered the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso grapes within the Montalcino region and created his masterpiece. The wine’s name, Brunello, meaning “little dark one,” alludes to the Sangiovese grapes’ fully ripened dark color.

Classification and Denomination of Brunello di Montalcino

Brunello di Montalcino wines are strictly classified and regulated to uphold the highest quality standards, beginning with Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita (DOCG).

This renowned designation serves as proof that this wine meets stringent production regulations, such as using only Sangiovese grapes from within Montalcino region for production purposes. Within DOCG, there are two additional categories designed to differentiate these wines: Riserva wines typically undergo extended aging of at least five years before attaining Riserva status, while Annata wines require two years before reaching this status.

Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was established in 1967 to preserve Brunello di Montalcino as a classic Tuscan winemaking tradition and to ensure its continued legacy, production, appreciation, and promotion. Winemakers work closely together, adhering to regulations set out by Consorzio that ensure strict adherence from vineyard to cellar door—something national and international audiences alike appreciate thanks to Consorzio’s watchful oversight that ensures both tradition and high-quality wines worldwide!

I booked in advance a wine tour, eager to experience first-hand how Brunello is produced and taste its different vintages and styles. On a guided tour, I learned all about its production: from four-year barrel ageing to how 100% Sangiovese grapes produce it (a local variety called Brunello or Sangiovese Grosso); as well as passion and tradition from winemakers who were eager for me to taste the product itself. I was truly inspired by their passionate approach while eager to taste the wine!

At first, I entered a tasting room where four Brunello wines from different years and vineyards were offered to me for tasting. With every sip, I noticed subtle nuances in color, bouquet, and taste—especially after my fourth tasting. This particular wine offered deep ruby hues with elegant complexity and full-bodied velvetiness that pair beautifully with meat, cheese, and truffle dishes. After purchasing my bottle, I thanked all for their hospitality and their efforts during my experience at their facility.

After visiting the winery, I wanted to learn more about the culture and the tradition of Montalcino and Brunello, so I decided to go to the Tempio del Brunello—an exhibit located inside the former convent and monumental complex of Sant’Agostino, the millennial and cultural heart of the town.

This complex, dating back to the 14th century, offers a unique sensory experience for wine lovers. Here’s what you can expect to find at Il Tempio del Brunello:

1. Cultural and Wine Dialogue: Within the museum, you’ll find a cloister and the Enoteca (called Bistrot of Il Tempio del Brunello), which directly faces the cloister. Here you can try different wines while discussing culture, art, and wine. An interactive showcase will guide you in choosing the Brunello that best suits your personality, based on questions related to your temperament. You can also discover the characteristics and color of Brunello from different aging years.

I also watched some immersive videos that explained the four pillars of Brunello: the soil, the biodiversity, the climate, and the people. The long aging process is necessary to reduce San Giovese’s strong tannic charge (i.e., amount of tannins) and allow its aromas to develop fully.

In the mid-19th century, Clemente Santi was the first to recognize the potential of the vigorous San Giovese wine called Brunello because of its dark color, in the almost arid climate and poor limestone-based soil of Montalcino. However, it was his nephew Ferruccio Biondi Santi who invented the wine that made Montalcino famous worldwide. For almost a century, Brunello was known only by its fans, until its popularity exploded in the last 40 years.

For the fullest cultural and culinary experience of Montalcino, summer and autumn are prime seasons to visit; numerous festivals and events showcasing local products take place during these times. Early September brings Honey Fest; October hosts the Cockel Festival; then at the end of October, Sagra del Tordo comes with historical re-enactments, and archery competitions from each district in Montalcino. Finally, in February, you can celebrate the Wine Festival.

When you first arrive in Certaldo, it looks like a normal Italian 20th-century town. But that’s because you are in Certaldo Basso, in the valley. Certaldo, in fact, is split into Certaldo Alto and Certaldo Basso. The medieval gem is Certaldo Alto, steeped in history and poetry, also the place often associated with a great poet, scholar, and writer—Giovanni Boccaccio—and the red onion, a local specialty.
